Review: TP-Link Tapo P110M Smart Plug - Matter Compatible Over Wi-Fi
Recently, I had the chance to get two TP-Link Tapo P110M smart plugs from Amazon for just 2030 yen—a great deal for a quality plug from a major maker like TP-Link. Buy it on Amazon. Here’s my review and experience with setting it up for local control with Home Assistant.
First Impressions
The Tapo P110M has a classic form factor, but one drawback is that it’s tough to use two of these plugs side-by-side due to their size.
Setting Up with Matter and Home Assistant
As this blog focuses on local testing, I first set up the Tapo P110M using the Matter standard with Home Assistant. The setup process was straightforward, with on-screen instructions guiding me through each step.
Features with Matter:
- On/Off Control: Works seamlessly in Home Assistant.
- Energy Metering: Unfortunately, this feature is not available yet. Upon investigation, I found that Matter added energy metering support in version 1.3, released in May 2024. However, the Tapo P110M, which launched in October 2023, doesn’t currently support it and has not received an update. According to users on the TP-Link community forum, an update is not confirmed either: TP-Link Forum Discussion.
Thoughts on Matter:
- Matter is a relatively new standard, so it’s not unexpected to encounter some limitations as compatibility features are gradually rolled out.
Adding the Plug via TP-Link/Tapo Integration for Full Features
Thankfully, Home Assistant also has a native TP-Link/Tapo integration, which allows more comprehensive control. After setting up the plug through the Tapo app on my phone, I was able to add it to Home Assistant.
Features with TP-Link/Tapo Integration:
- On/Off Control: Works smoothly.
- Energy Metering: Available through this integration.
Note: While the TP-Link/Tapo integration requires an initial setup online, usage afterward is done locally. This dependence on online setup may pose a risk if the service becomes unavailable in the future.
Performance and Reliability
Since my first purchase of this model in August 2024, the Tapo P110M has been reliable with no significant issues. The plug has performed well for controlling devices, and I can monitor energy usage when using the TP-Link/Tapo integration.
Conclusion
The TP-Link Tapo P110M is a solid choice for smart home setups, especially with local control options through Home Assistant. While Matter support is limited for now (lacking energy metering), the plug performs reliably and offers an alternative setup through the TP-Link/Tapo integration for more features. For anyone looking for an affordable and dependable smart plug, the Tapo P110M is definitely worth considering.
